Greetings from Nicaragua!

Hello everybody,

I wanted to give you an update on my experience so far.  We have been doing a lot of work in training and have been really busy!  There are two other trainees in my town with me: Kellie and Jessica.  Kellie is from Washington DC, and Jessica is from Arizona.  We are working together with a group of high school students Tuesday and Wednesday nights to teach them English.  We are also working at the high school in our town, teaching English in different classes.  I'm working with 7th grade students, Kellie has 9th graders, and Jessica has 10th graders.  We are having a good time working with the English teacher here and planning our lessons.  We are also learning a lot of Spanish.  Kellie, Jessica, and I all live with different host families in our town.  Many homes here have many family members living together.  In my house, there is my host mom, my host mom's sister and daughter, my host mom's daughter with her husband and daughter, my host mom's daughter-in-law with her two kids (her husband is working in the U.S.), and my host mom's son and his wife and two daughters live next door.  We share a backyard with them, so they are often visiting in our house.  There are a lot of people in here so there's always someone to talk to.  Does this sound similar or different from your homes?  My home back in the US just has my mom, dad, brother, and me.

We have gone on a couple adventures while we have been here.  Most recently, we went to a live volcano.  I could smell the sulfur and see steam coming from inside.  It was pretty cool!  Here are some pictures:
There is a different volcano in the background--Nicaragua is called the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes".

Here is the volcano that we went to and got to look inside!

Don't worry!  I didn't fall inside!

This is me with Kellie, one of the trainees in my town.

This is our TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) group.  We were missing 3 people so we wrote their names on paper and held them up in the picture so they wouldn't feel left out.

This is looking down into the volcano--can you see the steam?  It's an active volcano, which means it can erupt at any time.

  1. Hi I am Brittany, and I love the jungle and rainforest. This is kind of where you are right now. I was wondering if you have seen any monkeys on any of your adventures? I love monkeys! I think it is cool that you are helping the Peace Corp. What kind of food do you eat in Nicaragua?
    Sincerely, Brittany

  2. Megan I think it’s so cool that you got to go to a volcano. Was it hot next to the volcano? How far away was it from your host house and how often do you go to it. That would be so fun to go up to a real live volcano. How hot is it in Nicaragua? Is it hot, is it really cold or is it in mid temp?
    Sincerely,
    Katy

  3. Hello finally getting to talk too, I’m very exited also! Before I ask you some questions my name is Lexi and I am very eager to talk to you. One of the things I would like to talk about was also the volcano, were you scared, how were your reactions about being there? How do you feel about the weather conditions there? I’ve heard that it is nice. Do you like it hot or do you prefer the cold? Well thank you for your time.(:
    Your Friend,
    Lexi

  4. Hi! I’m Rose. I think it’s really cool what you’re doing and I think it’s really cool I get to blog to you. What’s it like in Nicaragua? Is it pretty? Are you close to any jungles? I read in your blog that you got to see a real active volcano. That is so cool! Were you scared knowing that the volcano could erupt? I know I would be. Have you seen any big cats? I like leopards. Do you? I adore nature. I’m always trying to learn more about plants. You are lucky. Good luck in Nicaragua!

  7. Hi my name is Toby. I wanted to know if it was scary to go to the volcano, because I really want to see one up close! What kind of food do they have there? Is it really different or close to the same food here? Are you having fun? Is it interesting there? It is properly different there then here.
    Sincerely,
    Toby

  8. I read in your blog you were at a volcano how did you get there and if it erupted are you so close you will be hit by it? Was it scary up there? I’m wondering was it hot in the volcano? Was it hard to get there? Do the people you live with have a car? Do you ever get homesick and is it very different from there and here?
    Sincerely,
    Kenzie
